OAR's Gala Brings New and Old Friends Together

CELEBRATE Another beautiful sunset met the attendees of our annual gala last month. We were very fortunate to welcome the sun after a week of much-needed rain. The evening was full of new faces and friends eager to learn more about OAR's mission and get involved. OAR's work touches our community in a significant way, and we recruited new volunteers and donors as they heard our testimony.

We welcomed our keynote speaker, Kareem Hester, and he shared his experience navigating our justice system and how critical the reentry services OAR offered were to his success.

With staff, volunteers, interns, and supporter families gathered together, we were able to converse about our vision of creating a more just and equitable community by addressing upstream issues that keep us all (including our tax dollars) caught in a cycle. We hope that every time we gather, we get a little closer to that vision. We take these connections and conversations out into our circles, and we share the success stories and vision for how things can be. One step at a time. This is how change happens.

OAR Receives Generous Donation, Mayor of Fairfax Stops By

DONATE & CONNECT On May 29, 2025, OAR welcomed a special visit from City of Fairfax Mayor, Catherine S. Read, and OAR Board Member Jay Whetzel of FedWriters Inc., who presented a generous donation of 20 gently used laptops to the organization. The laptops will support critical staff work as well as client activities, including employment preparation, educational activities, and digital literacy assistance.

Mayor Read toured OAR’s Fairfax headquarters, meeting with staff and learning more about the organization’s work to support justice-involved individuals and their families across Northern Virginia. Jay Whetzel, who serves on OAR NOVA’s Board of Directors and represents FedWriters
Inc., a professional communications firm based in Fairfax, organized and coordinated the donation and joined the mayor and staff on the tour.

Donations like these play a vital role in OAR’s work, and they highlight the importance of community partnerships in carrying out the OAR mission. This work cannot simply be done by one nonprofit alone. We appreciate the support from both local businesses and our local government in supporting justice-involved families.

For more information about OAR NOVA and how you can offer your time or resources to benefit the OAR mission and clients, please visit oarnova.org or contact AJ Oskuie, Director of Development, at aoskuie@oarnova.org or 703-246-3184.
